Spicy Mezcal Cocktail with Mango + Habanero: Simple Mezcal Cocktails

spicy mezcal cocktail mango habanero simple mezcal cocktails copy-2LR

It’s mango season in Oaxaca, that means I am trying to find more ways to incorporate them into my diet. 🙂 So a couple weeks ago I tried making a spicy mezcal cocktail with mango and habanero. It was so good that I’ve since tried a couple other versions. I love simple mezcal cocktails, so this is easy to make, without fancy ingredients and has lots of room for variations.

I’m going to give 2 spicy mezcal cocktail variations below that you can choose based on your mood, but feel free to tweak based on your preferences. And if you don’t have mezcal on hand, tequila will also taste great, or even vodka.

Frozen Mango Spicy Mezcal Cocktail + Habanero

This is a delicious and refreshing frozen cocktail that would be perfect for brunch, happy hour, or anytime you want a refreshing, cold drink. This feels a bit like a boozy smoothie to me.

Servings: 1
Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • 1 Highball glass
  • 1.5 to 2 ounces of mezcal espadin (I say go with 2) *I don’t use my nicest mezcal for cocktails. I save that for sipping.
  • 1 Mango (preferably yellow for sweetness, and a little overripe is even better)
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • ¼-½ ounce simple syrup (or 1-2 teaspoons sugar)
  • 1 thin slice of habanero, chopped (no seeds)
  • Ice to fill the glass

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend. If it doesn’t fill the glass, add a bit more water or ice. Garnish with a thin slice of habanero if you like heat. Adjust sweetness to taste.

Mezcal Mango + Habanero Cocktail on the Rocks: Simple Mezcal Cocktails

This version is on the rocks and has less mango so it’s a bit lighter.

Servings: 1
Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • 1 Highball glass
  • 1.5 to 2 ounces of mezcal espadin (I say go with 2)
  • 1/2 Mango (preferably yellow for sweetness, a little overripe is even better)
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • ¼-½ ounce simple syrup (or 1-2 teaspoons sugar)
  • 1 thin slice of habanero, chopped (no seeds)
  • Ice to fill the glass

Add all ingredients to a blender, minus the ice. Blend and pour over the ice in your highball glass. Garnish with an additional thin slice of habanero if you want extra heat.

**No Spice, or Less Spicy Version: If you want spice but your partner doesn’t and you’re making a double batch, you can omit the habanero in the blender, and only garnish with a thin slice or two in the cocktail that you want to be spicy. Or leave it out all together if you don’t like spice.

Enjoy! Let me know how yours turn out!
